PAGANIZER As Mankind Rots
NewRogga Johansson rides again, this time with Paganizer, arguably his flagship band, whose history stretches back to the late nineties. As Mankind Rots marks the group’s fourteenth full-length album, and as always, Paganizer delivers exactly what longtime fans expect. This is straightforward, no-frills Swedish death metal, leaning far more toward the crushing weight of Grave and Dismember than anything associated with the Gothenburg melodeth sound. Bolt Thrower also comes to mind as a fitting reference point when absorbing the band’s relentless assault.
The music stays firmly rooted in classic death metal tradition and does not attempt to reinvent the wheel. Some listeners may criticize the band for a lack of originality, but to me this consistency is a strength. Paganizer knows precisely what they do best, and they execute it with conviction. At just under 40 minutes, the album is tightly constructed, with each track offering its own satisfying dose of savagery.
A locked-in rhythm section provides a granite-solid backbone for the perpetually filthy riffing, while Rogga’s unmistakable growls dominate the mix. The production strikes an ideal balance: powerful and clear enough to showcase the musicianship, yet sufficiently gritty to maintain the style’s essential rawness. Beneath the barrage of drums, bass, and guitars, the band still manages to weave in subtle melodic and atmospheric elements, adding depth without compromising the overall brutality.
If uncompromising, classic death metal is your domain, As Mankind Rots is a safe, and highly rewarding, bet.
