There has been significant changes in the Riot camp since the release of the excellent 2011 album ‘Immortal Soul’ featuring the same line up that recorded the classic ‘Thundersteel’ and ‘The Privilege Of Power’ albums. First there is of course the tragic passing away of founder member, composer and guitar maestro Mark Reale whose memory this new album is dedicated to. In addition to this vocalist Tony More decided to step out of the limelight to give priority to his family. With these two talented and charismatic characters out of the band I must admit that I was a bit unsure of what to expect from this new album. But it took me only a couple of minutes of listening to state that ‘Unleash The Fire’ sounds classic Riot or at least as close as it is possible to get without Mark’s presence. Most of the material on the album is written by bassist Don Van Starvern who also wrote most of the songs for ‘Thundersteel’ and ‘The Privilege Of Power’ albums. It’s classic aggressive but yet incredible melodic power metal of premium quality. The new singer, Todd Michael Hall, does a great job and fits into Riot’s soundscape just perfect. He actually sound pretty close to Tony More, both when it comes to vocal range and the phrasing of the vocal lines. Guitarists Mike Flyntz and new guy Nick Lee also deserves credit for the way they deliver riffs and lead parts that I’m sure would have made Mark Reale proud. Having been a huge Riot fan since the mid-eighties I’m delighted to say that the band sounds vital as ever these days. ‘Unleash The Fire’ might not fully match ‘Immortal Soul’, but it’s not far behind.
