Founded by brothers Joe and David Haley back in 1999, Tasmanian technical death metal veterans Cryptopsy are soon about to celebrate their 20th anniversary, but before that a new album sees the light of day. As The Kingdom Drownes is the title of their latest offering, and it may very well be the best album of their carreer. I´m still not 100 % comfortable with Jason Peppiatt´s vocals, and in my opinion a deeper growling style of vocals would have suited the music so much better. Besides from that I honestly can´t fint much to complain about here. The flawless riffing and all the technical twist and turns are off course all in place, but without sounding like a neverending show-off. What makes As The Kingdom Drownes stand out from their previous albumst though is the quality of the song material itself along with the brilliant arrangements and the clear and powerful production. The one thing I feel about the mix though is that the bass guitar could have been pushed slightly more upfront, but thats just a matter of taste I guess. Anyway, As The Kingdom Drownes is an excellent technical death metal album, that can easily be recommended. Especially if you are comfortable with the more screaming vocal style, rather than deep growling vocals.
