VOLCANDRA Beyond The Will Of Mortals

With Beyond The Will Of Mortals, Kentucky’s Volcandra deliver their third full-length album and a confident continuation of the artistic path they’ve been carving in recent years. Following the impressive The Way Of Ancients (2024), expectations were understandably high, and this new release meets them with striking assurance.

Rather than reinventing their sound, Volcandra double down on what already worked, refining and sharpening their approach. The result is an album that feels more cohesive and polished, without losing the raw intensity that defines their identity. It’s a natural progression, one that suggests a band increasingly comfortable in its own creative skin.

Stylistically, Volcandra remain difficult to pin neatly into a single genre bracket. However, the dominant blend of melodic death metal and black metal provides a solid reference point. The band skillfully weaves together these elements, combining icy tremolo-picked passages and ferocious blast beats with sweeping melodic lines and atmospheric depth. It’s a dynamic contrast that gives the album both power and emotional resonance.

The songwriting across the record is consistently strong. Razor-sharp guitar work drives the material forward, supported by a rhythm section that is both punishing and precise. At the same time, Volcandra never lose sight of melody, arguably their greatest strength. The interplay between aggression and beauty is handled with impressive finesse, giving the album a cinematic quality at times.

Vocally, the band alternates between deep death metal growls and higher-pitched black metal screams. While this combination can sometimes feel overused or uneven in lesser hands, here it works remarkably well, adding texture and variety without disrupting the overall flow.

Spanning eight tracks and clocking in at just under 40 minutes, Beyond The Will Of Mortals is tightly structured and free of filler. It’s an album that rewards both casual listens and deeper immersion, revealing new layers with each return.

For fans of melodic extreme metal, or anyone drawn to the intersection of death and black metal, this is an easy recommendation. Volcandra have not only lived up to expectations but have taken a clear step forward.
