BLOOD RED THRONE Imperial Congregation

Norwegian death metal stalwarts Blood Red Throne return with their tenth full‑length album, Imperial Congregation, released through Nuclear Blast Records. While the band remains firmly rooted in the old‑school death metal sound that has defined their career, three elements in particular make this record stand out.

First, the production is markedly stronger than on previous releases, its cleaner, heavier, and far more dynamic. Second, the songwriting leans into a groovier, more melodic and varied direction without sacrificing the band’s trademark brutality. And finally, the vocals: deeper, more guttural, and delivered with a conviction that fits the material perfectly. The occasional screams are still present, but wisely kept to a minimum.

The album’s consistency is striking. Imperial Congregation offers no filler, only tightly crafted tracks supported by excellent guitar work, crushing riffs paired with memorable harmonies and well‑executed leads. A special nod goes to Yngve “Bolt” Christiansen, whose commanding guttural performance elevates the entire record. More of this, please.

To my ears, Imperial Congregation is not only Blood Red Throne’s strongest album to date, but also one of the standout death metal releases of 2021. Highly recommended.
