BLOOD RED THRONE Siltskin
NewBlood Red Throne and I have had a somewhat complicated relationship over the years, largely due to the band’s vocal approach, more specifically, the blend of highpitched screams and deep guttural growls. Personally, I’ve always felt the band’s music would benefit from focusing exclusively on the cavernous growls, which I find far more complementary to their sound. Their outstanding 2021 release Imperial Congregation, where the shrieks were used sparingly, remains the strongest evidence of this.
That said, Blood Red Throne have consistently delivered highquality, hardhitting death metal, armed with riffs and hooks that rank among the genre’s finest. Siltskin is no exception. Despite the increased reliance on higherpitched vocals, the album stands as a powerful and engaging work loaded with memorable grooves, tight riffing, and wellcrafted harmonies. The dynamic interplay between fullthrottle death metal assaults and more driving, melodic passages is particularly effective.
The production is robust and crystal clear, giving every detail the space it needs to shine. For me, Siltskin firmly secures a place in the upper tier of BRT’s catalog, likely top three, alongside the previously mentioned Imperial Congregation and Fit to Kill. Even so, the persistent use of highpitched screams remains a sticking point, leaving me wondering just how exceptional this album could have been with an exclusively growled vocal delivery.
