EYE OF PURGATORY Darkborne
NewHailing from Kalmar, Sweden, Eye of Purgatory is yet another project from Rogga Johansson—arguably one of the most prolific figures in the death metal scene in terms of sheer output. Darkborne emerges barely a week after the latest Paganizer release, a pace that often fuels criticism that such productivity compromises quality. In this case, however, those concerns prove unfounded. Darkborne delivers uncompromising, classic Swedish death metal with all the grit and weight the style demands.
While the album does little to push boundaries or innovate, it compensates with strong songwriting, groovy riff work, and a tasteful melodic undercurrent. Although firmly guitar-driven, the strategic use of keyboards adds atmospheric depth and enhances several choruses—an approach that, to my ears, works exceptionally well.
All told, Darkborne stands as a highly enjoyable release. If you consider yourself a fan of traditional Swedish death metal, there is every reason to believe this album will resonate with you.
