GOROD Æthra
HotFor more than a decade French technical death metal act Gorod has been a force to count on within the genre, and now they are back with their sixth full lenght album entitled Æthra. Even though their mucical skills and abilities are undisputable, some critics have questioned their song writing abilities over the years and I tend to agree that it might have been the bands achilles heel on some of their albums. On Æthra though you can clearly hear that songwriting has been the main focus, which again has resulted in the most consistent and probably also the best Gorod album to date. It's those moments when out of this world technical skills and a impressingly strong song material with insane riffs, a great level of detail, brutality and melody melts together into perfect harmony that the greatness of this genre we like to call technical death metal really shines through. Besides the song material I also have to point out the amazing guitar work of Mathieu Pascal and Nicolas Alberny on this album, from the high intensity riffing, via virtous solos to beautiful harmonies. Frontman Julien Deyres deserves credit as well for his energic perormance. 2018 has been a great year for tech death with a bunch of top notch releases so the competition is razor sharp, but Æthra still stands out as one of the absolute highlights of this year.
