IMMOLATION Descent

As one of the true pioneers of the American death metal scene, New York’s Immolation really needs little introduction. Descent marks the band’s twelfth studio album overall, their fifth for Nuclear Blast Records, and the third recorded with a lineup that has now remained stable for roughly a decade. Few bands in extreme metal can boast such remarkable consistency across such a long career, and Immolation is one of the rare exceptions, continuously refining their sound without ever losing their identity.

That said, Descent stands out even within an already formidable discography. To my ears, it ranks among the strongest releases Immolation has ever delivered. The songwriting showcases the band’s technical mastery in a way that feels purposeful rather than self-indulgent, balancing complexity with weight and atmosphere. The rhythm section is razortight throughout, forming a rocksolid foundation upon which Robert Vigna and Alex Boux unleash a barrage of truly inspired guitar work. Their riffs are dense and menacing, the harmonies unsettling, and the leads sharp and expressive without overstaying their welcome.

As if that weren’t enough, Immolation is still fronted by one of the genre’s most commanding vocalists. Ross Dolan’s growls remain as authoritative and intimidating as ever, perfectly complementing the band’s dark, oppressive soundscapes. Descent may take a few spins to fully reveal its depth, but once it clicks, it’s hard to put down. A powerful and rewarding listen, highly recommended.
