'Purgatorio' is the title of the third full lenght album from Sweden's, Gothenburg based heavy metal/power metal band Manimal and it's definitely one to look out for if you're a fan of the genre. I enjoyed some of the material on their first two albums, but this new one is, at least to my ears, their best and most consistent work to date. While the first two albums tended more towards power metal, 'Purgatorio' sees the band moving more towards traditional heavy metal and it actually suits them very well. The band sounds very tight with Henrik Stenroos tasty guitarwork over a rock solid rhythm section and atmospheric keyboard arrangements. Frontman Samuel Nyman is a very talented singer with a wide vocal range, and he delivers a stunning performance on these nine tracks. But most important of all is of course the song material, and that's the one thing that really makes 'Pugatorio' stand out, not only compared to their previous efforts, but also from the huge amount of releases within this genre these days. It doesn't hurt that it all comes with an crystal clear and powerful production as well. Highly recommended to fans of both traditional heavy metal and power metal.
