NECROPHAGIA WhiteWorm Cathedral

The history of Necrophagia reaches back to 1983 and the band is considered as one of the pioneers of death metal. The band broke up in 1987 but re-united in 1998 and has since then been active. I must admit that I haven’t paid these guys too much attention in the past so my knowledge of their history and previous releases is quite limited. The music on ‘WhiteWorm Cathedral’ lies in the borderline between old school death metal and black metal with some horror inspired keyboard arrangements. To me Necrophagia sounds like some kind of mixture between Satyricon and Cradle of Filth with a few old school death metal elements added. The production is old school as well and probably just the way the band wants it to be, but I feel that a more modern and clinical production would have lifted the song material even further. ‘WhiteWorm Cathedral’ is by no means poor but still I find most of the material a bit too anonymous without any real killer tracks. I do like the horror movie inspired atmosphere that surrounds the album though.
