SORCERER Lamenting Of The Innocent
HotSwedish epic doom/heavy metal outfit Sorcerer delivered an excellent album with The Crowning of the Fire King in 2017, and now they finally return with a brand‑new release. Formed back in 1988, the band issued a couple of demos in the late ’80s and early ’90s before fading from the spotlight, eventually reawakening in 2015 with their long‑awaited debut album. Their sound is often labeled “epic doom metal,” but there’s a clear thread of traditional ’80s heavy metal woven throughout their music as well.
I once heard Sorcerer described as the perfect blend of Candlemass and Black Sabbath, specifically the Dio, Ray Gillen, and Tony Martin eras, and I honestly couldn’t agree more. Two things in particular set Sorcerer apart: exceptional musicianship and a consistently strong sense of songwriting craft. On this album, those strengths are elevated even further by a standout vocal performance from Anders Engberg, whose commanding delivery gives the material both weight and emotional depth.
The album features ten tracks, including an intro, and there isn’t a single weak moment to be found. The songs are well‑arranged, atmospheric, and steeped in the kind of epic grandeur that defines the genre, all supported by a powerful, modern production that enhances the band’s dramatic sound.
If you’re drawn to meticulously crafted, epic, and atmospheric doom/heavy metal with a polished contemporary edge, Lamenting the Innocent is an album you absolutely shouldn’t miss. Outstanding work.
