THIS MISERY GARDEN Cornerstone

I can´t remember having heard the debut album of Swiss band THIS MISERY GARDEN, so this is actually my first meeting with their music. After a creative break the guys are now back with the follow up to their 2009 debut ´Another Great Day On Earth´. ´Cornerstone´ was recorded in Downtone Studio, Geneva by Drop, while Jens Bogren has been responsible for the mastering. THIS MISERY GARDEN´s music is a bit hard to categorize, but they have incorporated both elements of melodic rock in the vain of STAINED and darker and more melancholic elements which at times reminds of early KATATONIA. Some of the tracks have a slightly progressive edge to them as well. All tracks are of good quality, but still I miss a little variation since the album sounds a bit monotonous in the long run. On the vocal side the band swears to clean vocals which is fine, but some death grunths here and there would have suited the music perfect and it would also have contributed to more variation. ´Cornerstone´is a good, atmospheric and melancholic rock/doom/goth album, but unfortunately it lacks the ultimate highlights.
