TONY IOMMI From The Dark
NewAt 78, Tony Iommi, The Godfather of Heavy Metal, returns with From The Dark, a solo album that immediately reaffirms his unmatched ability to craft the haunting, weighty riffs that have defined the genre for more than half a century. From the opening moments, it’s clear that Iommi’s creative spark remains fully intact.
For this record, he has assembled a formidable lineup: Norwegian vocalist Jørn Lande, Mercyful Fate bassist Becky Baldwin, and drummer Karl Brazil. Their presence shapes the album’s character in meaningful ways. The overall atmosphere recalls the Tony Martin era of Black Sabbath, Headless Cross album in particular, yet Lande’s vocal timbre inevitably evokes Ronnie James Dio as well, lending the material a familiar but revitalized grandeur.
Musically, From The Dark sits squarely at the intersection of classic heavy metal and doom, driven by mid‑tempo grooves and Iommi’s unmistakable riff architecture. Baldwin and Brazil provide a rock‑solid rhythmic foundation, allowing Iommi’s guitar work, both the brooding riffs and the soaring leads, to take center stage. Lande’s commanding vocal performance completes the picture, giving each track a sense of drama and weight.
Across its eight songs, the album maintains a remarkably high standard. There are no weak links, though Stormwatcher and Death Wake stand out as particularly compelling highlights.
Whether this ends up being Iommi’s final studio album remains to be seen. If it is, From The Dark serves as a worthy and dignified capstone to an extraordinary career, an album that honors his legacy while at the same time proving he still has plenty of fire left.
