VINTERSORG Orkan

As always when a new Vintersorg album arrives it’s just like Christmas eve at my place, I’ve been a huge fan of this guy’s work and talent way back since the release of the amazing ‘Till Fjälls’ album in ’98. Ok, there was a period that I wasn’t too happy about the direction the music took with a bit too much flirting with progressive rock and English lyrics, but on the later albums he, or they, have changed back to the winning formula from the early days with the unmistakable and beautiful blend of black metal and folk metal with Swedish lyrics. ‘Jordpuls’ was a great album, but if possible ‘Orkan’ is even better. It has so much in common with ‘Till Fjälls’ and ‘Ödemarkens Son’ with rough but yet incredible atmospheric arrangements and the combination of screaming black metal vocals and clean vocals. Despite the consistent quality of all Vintersorg albums I’ve been missing the real killer track such as ‘Till Fjälls’, ‘Ödemarkens Son’ or ‘Den Trollska Dalens Hjärta’, but on ‘Orkan’ there is one track of similar quality with the same amazing atmosphere that once made me fall for this band. I’m of course thinking of ‘Polarnatten’, amazing stuff! Vintersorg are right back where they belong and ‘Orkan’ is their best album since ‘Ödemarkens Son’.
