The deathcore genre is constantly evolving pushing boundaries of musicianship and production to new heights. While UK based band Viscera might be a new name to the genre, that is not the case for the musicians being members and former members of acts such as Sylosis, Nervecell, Heart Of A Coward, Martyr Defiled and Abhorrent Decimation. Although deathcore is the foundation of Viscera’s music there are lots of elements of closely related genres such as technical- and melodical death metal in their intricate soundscape. The material is very much guitar, bass and drum driven but keyboard and samples are quite frequently used at the right places to create a bombastic and at times symphonic atmosphere. The vocals are mostly switching between guttural and screams but there are also a few parts featuring clean singing. While the technical performance is outstanding and the production more or less top notch, it’s the quality of the song material that really makes ‘Obsidian’ stand out from the masses. Definitely a must have for any deathcore fan out there.
