The deathcore genre continues to evolve, pushing the limits of musicianship and production with each new wave of releases. While UK‑based Viscera may be a fresh name to some listeners, the musicians behind the project are anything but newcomers, boasting résumés that include Sylosis, Nervecell, Heart of a Coward, Martyr Defiled, and Abhorrent Decimation. That pedigree shows.

Although deathcore forms the backbone of Viscera’s sound, Obsidian draws heavily from adjacent styles, technical death metal, melodic death metal, and even symphonic elements, resulting in a dense and dynamic sonic landscape. The core of the material is driven by razor‑sharp guitars, thunderous bass, and precision drumming, yet the band makes effective use of keyboards and samples to build a grand, sometimes cinematic atmosphere.

Vocally, the album shifts between guttural growls and piercing screams, with occasional clean passages adding contrast without feeling forced. The technical execution is consistently impressive, and the production is polished to near perfection, but what truly sets Obsidian apart is the strength of the songwriting. These tracks aren’t just showcases of skill, they’re memorable, well‑constructed, and packed with hooks that hit as hard as the breakdowns.

Viscera may be a new name, but Obsidian positions them as a serious contender within modern deathcore. For fans of the genre, this one is essential listening.
