VREID Welcome Farewell
HotOn their later releases Norwegian extreme metal act Vreid have made historical based concept stories some kind of a trademark. While ´I Krig´and ´Milorg´ was about the Norwegian liberation work during world war 2, ´V´was dealing with liberation in a broader historical and philosophic view. On ´Welcome Farewell" the lyrics are more personal and concentrated around Hválls own local community. The music is still typical Vreid but everything seems to be taken another step further. Their style includes elements of folk music and traditional heavy metal from the 70´s and the 80´s, but the foundation is still black metal. Mixing all those elements together gives Vreid a rather unique expressions which is often being referred to as black n roll. The material is brutal and heavy, but yet catchy, atmospheric and very melodic. I especially like it where thundering black metal riffs suddenly turns into the most beautiful and atmospheric parts such as the ending of the track ´Visions of old´. Vreid has definitely matured over the years and their music have become more and more sophisticated for each album. This trend continues on ´Welcome Farewell´ which stands out as their most consistent and probably best album to date. In other words a worthy follow up to their Norwegian Grammy nominated 2011 release ´V´.
