Formed in Finland in 2021, Arctora is a melodic death/black metal band that blends the icy atmosphere of the North with powerful melodies, aggressive riffing, and emotionally charged songwriting. Originally conceived as the solo project of guitarist and vocalist Joel Notkonen, the band's debut material gradually evolved into a full-fledged group featuring musicians from several established Finnish extreme metal acts.
Arctora's music combines elements of melodic death metal, black metal, and modern extreme metal, balancing crushing heaviness with soaring melodies and melancholic atmospheres. Lyrically, the band explores personal struggles, inner conflict, resilience, and hope, presenting introspective stories that reflect both the beauty and harshness of the Nordic landscape. Their compositions seek to offer listeners a sense of catharsis through music, pairing emotional depth with relentless intensity.
The band's debut album, The Storm Is Over, was released in September 2022 through Wormholedeath. Although based largely on songs written during Notkonen's original solo project, the album established Arctora as a promising new force within the Finnish melodic extreme metal scene, earning attention for its polished production and memorable songwriting.
Following the debut, Arctora expanded its collaborative songwriting approach with a permanent lineup. Throughout 2024 and 2025, the band focused on composing and recording its sophomore full-length, Dressed In Golden Sunlight, refining its sound while maintaining the emotional core that defined its debut. In early 2026, Arctora signed with Art Gates Records, marking a significant step forward in the band's career and preparing for a broader international audience.
With a sound rooted in the traditions of Finnish melodic death and black metal yet enriched by modern production and deeply personal songwriting, Arctora continues to establish itself as one of the country's most promising newcomers in contemporary extreme metal.
