Azatoth is a Finnish death metal band from Vantaa, Uusimaa, formed in 2020. Emerging as part of a new generation of Finnish underground death metal, the band draws heavily upon the dark, cavernous and unmistakably rotten sound associated with Finland's early death metal movement, while also incorporating influences from the broader old-school death metal tradition.

The band was originally formed around bassist Joel Das, drummer Juuso Hämäläinen, guitarist/vocalist Akseli Lindroos and rhythm guitarist Valo Vesala. Despite the young age of its members, Azatoth quickly demonstrated a strong understanding of the primitive atmosphere and oppressive heaviness that characterized Finnish death metal during the early 1990s.

After an initial demo titled Sacrificial Suicide in 2020, Azatoth gained wider attention with the independently released demo Ruins of Humanity in July 2021. Featuring five tracks of murky and uncompromising death metal, the recording established the band's musical identity through crushing riffs, deep vocals and a deliberately raw production. Its sound recalled classic Finnish acts such as Demigod, Convulse, Funebre and Abhorrence, while retaining enough personality to prevent the music from becoming merely an exercise in nostalgia.

Ruins of Humanity received a positive response within the underground death metal community and helped establish Azatoth as one of the promising younger bands emerging from Finland. The recording was subsequently given a physical release through Chaos Records.

The band's development continued with Ungodly Carnage in 2022. Darker, heavier and increasingly confident, the release further refined Azatoth's combination of subterranean Finnish death metal and the crushing influence of bands such as Incantation and Dead Congregation. Songs including “Mortal Gods,” “Lunatic Butchery,” “Eschaton” and “Vomiting God's Remains” demonstrated a band increasingly comfortable creating a suffocating atmosphere through dense guitar work, violent rhythmic shifts and massive, doom-laden passages.

Azatoth continued its underground activity in 2023, contributing material to the split release Obnoxious Path of Reincarnation. During this period the band also became increasingly active on the live circuit, developing a reputation within the contemporary Finnish death metal scene.

A significant lineup change followed in 2024 when founding guitarist and vocalist Akseli Lindroos departed the band. Bassist Joel Das subsequently assumed lead vocal duties, while guitarist Daniel Gamache, who had joined Azatoth in 2021, added backing vocals. Guitarist Roni Levo joined in 2024, completing a lineup consisting of Das, Gamache, Levo and founding drummer Juuso Hämäläinen.

The musicians surrounding Azatoth are closely connected to Finland's increasingly fertile young death metal underground. Members have also been involved with bands including Disguised Malignance, Malformed, Gorekaust, Baron, Krusifoitu and Vomitous Nekrophilia, placing Azatoth firmly within a network of musicians carrying the country's extreme metal tradition into a new generation.

By the middle of the decade Azatoth had also begun appearing at increasingly prominent underground events. In June 2026 the band performed at Extremely Rotten Death Fest in Copenhagen alongside acts including Undergang, Anatomia, Gorephilia, Corpsessed, Malformed and Witch Vomit.

In August 2026, Azatoth announced the next major step in their development: their first full-length album, Carnal Lust of Blasphemy. Scheduled for release on August 21, 2026 through Extremely Rotten Productions, the album marks the band's transition from promising underground newcomers to a more established force within the contemporary Finnish death metal scene. The first advance track, “Veins of Rotten Blood,” continues their descent into dense, filthy and sinister old-school death metal.

Rather than adopting the polished approach of modern extreme metal, Azatoth remains committed to an intentionally primitive and oppressive aesthetic. Their music is built around distorted, crawling riffs, bursts of aggression, cavernous vocals and a pervasive atmosphere of decay. Horror and death provide the band's primary lyrical themes, complementing music firmly rooted in the darker traditions of the genre.

With their reverence for Finland's early death metal heritage combined with the energy of a much younger generation, Azatoth represent an increasingly strong revival of the country's underground sound. From the raw beginnings of Ruins of Humanity and the brutality of Ungodly Carnage to the forthcoming Carnal Lust of Blasphemy, the band has steadily developed into one of the notable names among Finland's new wave of old-school death metal.
