BIOGRAPHY
Beyond Mortal Dreams has existed in the Adelaide/Australian metal scene since the mid 90's, delivering a brutal style of death metal through their early live performances. However, it was in the early 2000’s when founding members Pahl Hodgson (aka Doomsayer) and Matthew Butt (aka Hellaeon) reunited after a period of absence to forge their unquenchable passion for dark and savage death metal into the music that represents Beyond Mortal Dreams today. During this time, two demo recordings were produced, PROMO 2004, followed by THE DEMON AND THE TREE OF THE DEAD (2006).
Both demos showcased the ferocity and at times a technical savagery that defined both Doomsayer and Hellaeon’s desire for a relentless and crushing style of death metal, mixed with both modern and old school elements. Joined by Ross ‘Ghuul’ Duncan (Bass/vocals) in 2005 and Jamie ‘Bloodspawn’ Whyte (Guitar) in 2006, the band had brought their musical savagery live, sharing the stage with many great Australian and international acts such as Portal, Nile, Behemoth, Decapitated, to name a few.
2008 saw the independent release of the band’s debut album FROM HELL, a crushing onslaught of face-melting brutality! However, just before the album’s release, Hellaeon had decided to part ways with the band, leaving BMD without a drummer to support the album live until 2010, when Simon ‘Maleficus’ O’Grady had come to join in the savage beating of the skins. Content to operate as a recording band only, writing and recording took place for the follow up to FROM HELL.
The result - 2012's DREAMING DEATH MCD. Released again independently, DREAMING DEATH was received by many in the underground as a death metal masterpiece. DREAMING DEATH took the the savagery of the earlier works into a more structured, at times ambient, and darker realm. With the help of label LAVADOME PRODUCTIONS, DREAMING DEATH spread farther out into the underground network than the band’s previous recordings ever have, gaining BMD a much wider exposure than it had ever seen before. DREAMING DEATH was re-released in 2013 as a limited number of copies on MLP through LAVADOME PRODUCTIONS, helping to further the cause and the reach of the band's devastation.
Beyond Mortal Dreams’ follow up to DREAMING DEATH was the 2014 7” vinyl EP entitled LAMIA, co-released by LAVADOME PRODUCTIONS and UNHOLY PROPHECIES. LAMIA saw a return to the more savage styles of BMD's earlier works, including the B-side re-recorded rendition of DEMONSWORD INFERNAL, which originally appeared on the 2006 demo. Not content to remain a studio band only anymore, 2014 also saw the return of Beyond Mortal Dreams to live active duty, returning from it's live hiatus for that year's BLACK CONJURATION FEST, an underground black/death/thrash and traditional heavy metal festival held in Adelaide, Australia, featuring many great metal acts from across the country and internationally.
BMD has since then continued to play live within Australia (it’s most recent appearance to date alongside Destroyer 666 in November 2016) as well as focusing on songwriting and recording for the band’s next full length release. Once again collaborating with LAVADOME PRODUCTIONS, the band’s latest CD ‘AS DEATH, WE SHALL WALK’ was released in October of 2016. Originally intended as the CD release of the LAMIA EP, AS DEATH also features a compilation of the 2004 and 2006 demo works, as well as previously unreleased demo tracks.
AS DEATH also features a cover rendition of one of the band’s favorites, the Nocturnus classic LAKE OF FIRE, featuring original Nocturnus drummer/vocalist Mike Browning (now of Nocturnus AD) on guest vocals. Having recently teamed up with U.S. based management company Distilled Entertainment, Beyond Mortal Dreams look forward to expanding their reach, setting their sights on entering the studio to record their long awaited second full length album and securing label interest that will help propel the band’s ambition of taking it’s death metal onslaught to metal maniacs world-wide!
