Crystal Throne is a French progressive heavy metal band founded in 2019 in Metz by guitarist Max Waynn and vocalist Terry DeFire. Blending melodic heavy metal, power metal, and progressive influences with the spirit of the 1980s, the band delivers technical songwriting, soaring melodies, and a rich universe inspired by science fiction, mythology, and fantasy.
Following their self-titled debut album in 2021, Crystal Throne expanded its lineup with new drummer Will Ram and second guitarist John L, bringing new depth and energy to the band's evolving sound. The result is Chantry Of Sacrifice, a darker, more ambitious and mature record that fully establishes Crystal Throne's identity. Set in the distant year 5150, it follows Hyldr, a war veteran and scientist who finds herself the last human in a universe where Earth has mysteriously vanished. Her final mission: travel back in time to uncover the truth and alter humanity's fate.
Combining progressive songwriting, memorable hooks, and an immersive sci-fi narrative, Chantry Of Sacrifice marks Crystal Throne's most confident and accomplished work to date. To further expand the album's universe, an accompanying audiobook is also in development, offering fans an even deeper immersion into its story.

BIOGRAPHY/LOGO

Crystal Throne is a progressive heavy/power metal band from Metz, France, formed in late 2019 by guitarist Max Waynn and vocalist Terry DeFire. Built upon a shared passion for traditional heavy metal, technical musicianship and the adventurous side of the genre, the band combines the spirit of classic 1980s metal with progressive arrangements, melodic guitar work and touches of power and speed metal.
Waynn and DeFire began the project after discovering an immediate musical chemistry while writing their first material together. Both musicians already had considerable experience within the heavy metal scene: DeFire had previously spent several years fronting Belgian heavy metal band Horacle, while Waynn was active with French hard rock outfit Drenalize. As their initial collaboration quickly developed into enough material for an album, bassist Jefferson Brand and drummer Alex Gricar were recruited to complete the original lineup.
Crystal Throne introduced their sound with the self-titled debut album Crystal Throne, independently released on November 24, 2021. The nine-track record established the band's distinctive mixture of traditional heavy metal, progressive metal and power metal, combining soaring vocals, intricate guitar passages, strong melodic hooks and an unmistakable old-school atmosphere. Songs such as “Rise to Glory,” “Timescape,” “Shades of Existence,” “Steelbirds,” “Valkyrie Ride” and the lengthy closing track “Crystal Warrior” demonstrated a band willing to move beyond straightforward traditional metal structures while remaining firmly rooted in the genre's classic foundations.
Although the band's music carries a pronounced 1980s character, Crystal Throne avoids functioning merely as a retro heavy metal act. Progressive structures, technical playing and frequent changes in mood give the material a more elaborate identity, while influences from classic heavy metal, NWOBHM, progressive metal and neoclassical guitar music can be heard throughout their work. Their lyrical world likewise reflects the grand scale of their music, drawing upon science fiction, mythology and epic themes.
During the following years, Crystal Throne became part of the increasingly vibrant new generation of French traditional heavy metal bands. In January 2026, the group appeared on the Metal Lourd compilation, dedicated to the New Wave of French Heavy Metal, alongside bands including Furies, Animalize, Star Rider, Hürlement, Herzel and Tentation. Crystal Throne contributed the previously unreleased French-language track “Rétribution et Châtiment.”
The band subsequently expanded its lineup, with guitarist John L and drummer Will Ram joining Max Waynn, Terry DeFire and bassist Jefferson Brand. This five-piece incarnation began preparing Crystal Throne's second full-length album and an ambitious new chapter in the band's development.
Entitled Chantry of Sacrifice, the new album is scheduled for release on October 2, 2026. Conceived as a concept album, it sees Crystal Throne pushing their progressive and melodic characteristics considerably further while retaining the powerful traditional heavy metal foundation of their debut. The album features nine tracks, including “A Hero's Call,” “Children of the Ruins,” “Tides of Ages,” “Electrical Savior,” “Walls of Silent Mourn,” “Antagonists,” “Insurgent Outcry,” the title track and “Sleeping in the Void.”
With their combination of traditional heavy metal firepower, progressive ambition, melodic sophistication and an unmistakable affection for the golden age of 1980s metal, Crystal Throne have established themselves as one of the distinctive names within the modern French heavy metal underground. Rather than simply recreating the past, the band uses the vocabulary of classic metal as the foundation for increasingly technical, progressive and ambitious songwriting.
