Det Eviga Leendet is a Swedish black metal band originating from Uppsala, with connections to both Uppsala and Stockholm. Emerging in 2015, the enigmatic collective has deliberately kept much of its membership concealed, allowing the music and its bleak artistic vision to remain at the centre of attention.

The band's name translates as "The Eternal Smile" and is taken from the 1920 novel Det eviga leendet by acclaimed Swedish author Pär Lagerkvist. The novel depicts a vast gathering of dead people sitting together in darkness, talking in an attempt to pass eternity – imagery that fits naturally with the band's sombre, introspective and existential approach to black metal.

Det Eviga Leendet made their recorded debut with the full-length album Lenience in 2018. Released through Fallen Empire Records, the album introduced a dense and atmospheric form of black metal built around dissonant guitar work, hypnotic repetition and an oppressive sense of melancholy. Rather than relying solely on aggression, the band created an atmosphere in which beauty and unease constantly coexist.

Four years later, Det Eviga Leendet returned with their second album, Reverence. Released in January 2022 through Mystískaos and Extraconscious Records, with a CD edition handled by Amor Fati Productions, the album marked a further development of the band's sound. American musician Jacob Buczarski, best known as the creative force behind atmospheric black metal project Mare Cognitum, joined the band as vocalist.

Recorded between Uppsala, Sweden and Portland, Oregon, Reverence expanded upon the foundations of the debut while pushing the music towards an even harsher and more suffocating expression. Tremolo-driven guitars, dissonance and turbulent passages were balanced against atmospheric and melancholic elements, creating a sound that remained firmly rooted in black metal while avoiding many of the genre's more conventional approaches. The album was mixed and mastered by Magnus Lindberg, while Johan G. Winther continued to play an important role in establishing the band's distinctive visual identity.

Despite maintaining an intentionally obscure public presence, Det Eviga Leendet have gradually established their own identity within contemporary black metal. Their music is characterised by a constant tension between violence and introspection, combining abrasive intensity with atmospheric depth and a persistent feeling of isolation and existential unease.

In August 2026, Det Eviga Leendet announced a new chapter in their history by signing with French label Debemur Morti Productions. The partnership will result in the release of the band's third full-length album, Vehemence, later in 2026. Described as pushing the contrasts within the band's music even further, the forthcoming record promises to combine clarity and disorientation, violence and melancholy, continuing Det Eviga Leendet's exploration of the darker and more introspective edges of modern black metal.
