Final Coil are proud to present their new official video "The Last Battle".

The Song:

The World We Left Behind For Others is a concept album detailing the lives and struggles of two people who lived in the shadow of World War II. If you listen to the album as a whole, it’s quite clear that different songs are being sung from different perspectives and, when taken together, they form a narrative that explores how the social divisions now rife in the West have their roots in the complicated social changes that took place in the post-war era.

The Last Battle is written from the perspective of a demobbed soldier, returned to find a society that seems indifferent to his struggles and focused on an internationalisation that seems at odds with the conflict that has just ended. The natural human reaction in such a set of circumstances is a mixture of fear, bewilderment and anger; and that comes across as he relates his story in tones tinged with bitterness and confusion. His initial reaction leads, as …and I’ll leave suggests, to alcoholism and a battle to cope; so the battle referred to in the title is both a reference to the actual end of the war and to the battle that the protagonist has to overcome to adapt to a society that seems to be changing rapidly around him. It’s a battle he’s destined to lose and, as his attitudes harden, so living with him becomes increasingly difficult.

The video:

For the video clip, we were re-united with our good friend Jay Hillyer, who filmed clips for Persistence of Memory. Early on we decided that we didn’t want to do a straightforward narrative for the video, so we started to look at the underlying feeling of claustrophobia and tension inherent in the song and, in focusing in on that, we came up with the idea of a young lady being chased through an eerie, abandoned base by some unseen force, eventually to run into a tunnel containing something still more sinister. It was influenced by a mix of horror movies (not least a shared love of The Evil Dead) and clips by bands such as Massive Attack, who created some truly fantastic videos for the Mezzanine album, few of which have a coherent storyline but which, instead, tap into an almost visceral sense of discomfort that perfectly matches the dark nature of the music.

Filming on an abandoned military base on a cold January afternoon, Jay got the idea straight away, and we had a blast dressing the set for the performance sections of the video. Even more fun was scouting the sprawling base for the various locations that our friend, Lou, would be running through (and oh, how we made her run!) When we came across the abandoned playground and the dark, L-shaped tunnel, we knew we’d hit the jackpot, and we made great use of the environment; although I have to tell you that trying to sing with those damned smoke grenades going off all over the place was a nightmare. We’re incredibly proud of the final result and I think Jay has really captured the lonely, atmospheric feel of the base in which we filmed.

BIOGRAPHY

Final Coil began their musical life in howls of feedback and chaos, a raging entity that tore up the stages of endless small clubs as they slowly found their direction. Gradually, that energy and electricity was channelled into smoother paths as the band looked deeper into themselves and their music, discovering how much more their individual abilities could create; realising they had so much more to say, that a fleeting impact wasn’t all they wished to achieve – they wanted to carve musical monuments that would stand the test of time and stand for something as well. Under the guiding hand of founding member Phil Stiles the line-up of the band morphed and shifted to reflect that change in focus and the first recorded output from the new look Final Coil was released in 2015. The Closed To The Light EP highlighted the significant developments in the band’s style so effectively that it caught the ear of Italian record label WormHoleDeath, who immediately signed the band up. Throughout 2016 Final Coil worked on their debut full length album, which was then unveiled by their new label in 2017...

In a world of ever shifting trends and fashions, where it’s always time to move on to the next thing and the value of anything and everything is fleeting, it’s a beautiful moment to find an album that stops you in your tracks. A combination of musicianship, song craft, depth of emotion and attention to detail that holds you transfixed while the rest of the world continues its unthinking charge into oblivion. An album where the lyrics invite thought and reflection and the artwork fires the imagination as the music brings it to vibrant life. Final Coil’s debut album, entitled Persistence Of Memory was just such an album; an island of colour and beauty in the ever flowing grey tides of modern life. The band joined forces with Imperative PR to promote the album and the reaction from the music press was outstanding.

The band finished 2017 with a flurry of well received live shows and returned to Imperative PR once more – this time for a long term management deal. The press continued to pick up on the brilliance of Persistence Of Memory throughout the early months of 2018 and away from the stage the band began to work on their most ambitious material to date. As summer neared its end Final Coil set off for Italy and Real Sound Studios to record their second full length album. Featuring the skills of session drummer Barry French (ex-Sarpanitum) blending beautifully with the flowing bottom end of bassist Jola Stiles and the twin guitars of Phil Stiles and Richard Awdry the new songs that Final Coil have created are going to stun everyone who hears them. Before the end of the year the band also managed to fit in live shows with OHHMS, Boss Keloid, Zero Point Zero and Staghorn.

Aside from his work with Final Coil, Phil Stiles was invited to make a guest appearance on the latest album from prog rock royalty, Glass Hammer (the band where Yes discovered vocalist Jon Davison).

Looking ahead to 2019 Final Coil are already booked to appear at Fusion 2019 with Focus and IO Earth and Hard Rock Hell Metal with Decapitated and Devilment. Then of course there is the small matter of album number two, due out on WormHoleDeath – an album that is going to take your breath away.
