FIRTAN present another song from their new album "Helios", scheduled for October 2nd 2026 via AOP Records.
A music video for the track "Ascension" can be seen below:
For over a decade, FIRTAN has been a relentless force in the German extreme metal scene, captivating audiences with their dynamic performances across Europe. The band's fifth studio album "Helios" charts the brutal path to enlightenment: Not as escape, but as conquest. Named after the sun itself, the album explores what it means to become the strongest, clearest version of oneself in a world engineered for distraction and decay.
"Helios" fuses the raw, atmospheric ferocity of black metal with the crushing weight of death metal, a mirror to the album's core theme: clarity forged through struggle. The evocative presence of the acoustic and electric violin weaves through their compositions with melancholic and experimental tones, which create tension and complexity, enhancing the band's intricate riffing and unexpected musical shifts. The incorporation of various acoustic instruments, ritualistic chants as well as analogue synthesizers adds layers of depth and atmosphere.

BIOGRAPHY/LOGO

Firtan is a German black metal band formed in Lörrach, Baden-Württemberg in 2010. Emerging from the country's underground scene with a sound initially rooted in pagan and atmospheric black metal, the band gradually developed into a far more progressive, melancholic and individual entity. Drawing inspiration from the raw spirit of 1990s black metal while incorporating elements of post-black metal, progressive extreme metal, folk and increasingly death metal, Firtan have established a distinctive musical identity built around atmosphere, intricate songwriting and emotional intensity.
The band's early years culminated in the EP Wogen der Trauer in 2013, followed by their debut full-length Niedergang in 2014. These releases displayed Firtan's pagan black metal foundations while already suggesting the more adventurous direction that would define their later material. The Innenwelt EP followed in 2016 and marked another stage in the band's development, with increasingly sophisticated arrangements and a darker, more introspective character.
Firtan took a considerable step forward with their second full-length album, Okeanos, released through AOP Records in 2018. The record expanded the band's atmospheric and progressive qualities and helped establish Firtan well beyond the German underground. Rather than relying on traditional black metal conventions, the band increasingly embraced complex structures, dynamic contrasts and melodic passages alongside aggressive riffing and harsh vocals.
This evolution continued on Marter in 2022. Recorded, mixed and mastered by Markus Stock at Klangschmiede Studio E, the album presented an ambitious mixture of atmospheric black metal, progressive songwriting and unconventional instrumentation. Acoustic textures and the prominent use of violin became particularly important components of Firtan's sound, providing a melancholic counterpoint to the aggression of the guitars and vocals.
The band's fourth album, Ethos, arrived in 2024 and further refined this approach. By this stage, Firtan had moved far beyond the comparatively straightforward pagan black metal of their beginnings. Their music had become an intricate form of modern black metal characterized by dissonance, melody, shifting dynamics and expansive arrangements, while themes of nature, despair, philosophy and the human condition replaced much of the pagan subject matter associated with their earliest work.
Alongside their studio activity, Firtan have built a reputation as an experienced live band, performing extensively across Europe. A document of this side of the group appeared in 2026 with Live at Summer Breeze, their first full-length live release.
Firtan's next chapter comes with their fifth studio album, Helios, scheduled for release on October 2nd, 2026 through AOP Records. The album pushes the band's sound further by combining the raw and atmospheric qualities of black metal with an increased death metal weight. Acoustic and electric violin remain central to the arrangements, joined by acoustic instrumentation, ritualistic chants and analogue synthesizers. Lyrically and conceptually, Helios revolves around struggle, transformation and the pursuit of clarity and self-mastery.
More than fifteen years after their formation, Firtan have evolved from their pagan black metal beginnings into one of the more distinctive voices within contemporary German black metal. Their combination of ferocity, melancholy, progressive composition and unusual instrumentation has allowed the band to continually expand its sound without abandoning the darkness and intensity at its core.
