Boston post-metal band, Junius, have released its new LP, ‘Sotera‘, via Prosthetic Records. ‘Sotera’ is Junius’ first full-length LP in nearly a decade, following 2017’s Eternal Rituals for the Accretion of Light, a recording that Rolling Stone noted, “takes the band’s alternately soaring and crashing sound to even more diverse places.” Produced by Junius vocalist/guitarist, Joseph E. Martinez and Tom Syrowski (Mastodon, AC/DC), the quasi-conceptual ‘Sotera’, in Martinez’s words, “feels like a rebirth for the band” and “is an act of devotion as much as it is a piece of “music.” Purchase/stream Junius‘ ‘Sotera’ at this location.
“The response to ‘Sotera’, so far has been incredibly encouraging,” shares Martinez. “After nine years, there’s always a little voice in the back of your head wondering if anyone still cares, so it’s been rewarding to see listeners connect with our music again. More than anything, we’re excited to finally get these songs in front of people. ‘Sotera’ feels like a rebirth for Junius, and with a renewed lineup and our first run of shows in support of the album, it genuinely feels like the beginning of a new chapter for us. We’re grateful to everyone who’s taken the time to listen, and we can’t wait to share these songs live.”
Harmonizing bright transcendence, heightened consciousness, coiled ear-worming, and emotional swell in like degree, ‘Sotera’s’ ambient shoegaze metal is expansive and deep, best experienced unhurriedly. Call it sound as relief and release; intense undercurrents of magnetic volume attached to an almost symphonic use of motion. Fully realized music as exhilarating as it is ghostly. Whereas earlier Junius records wrestled with cataclysms, escaping Samsara and what might come after death, ‘Sotera’ shifts the focus toward something more immediate: restoring balance through the worship of the divine feminine.

“The word Sotera is the feminine form of savior or protector in Greek, and it perfectly captured what the album was circling around,” offers Martinez. “This album is a musical invocation that explores the divine feminine as a force of transformation and balance. Medea stands at the threshold. In Sotera we’re calling upon Hekate, her mother, to guide us in her resurrection. The Oracle as a loving but ignored prophet. Lucifera appears as the punished light-bringer. The Initiatrix is the one who begins the rite.”

Tracklist:

2. The Oracle

BIOGRAPHY/LOGO

Junius is an American post-metal / post-rock band formed in Boston, Massachusetts, in 2003. The band quickly carved out a unique identity by blending heavy, atmospheric guitar work with haunting melodies, emotionally charged vocals, and expansive, cinematic songwriting. Their sound draws from post-metal, shoegaze, space rock, and alternative metal, often creating a dark yet uplifting sonic atmosphere.
The band was founded by vocalist/guitarist Joseph E. Martinez, guitarist Dana Filloon, bassist Ian Touloumtzis, and drummer Matt Mozdzer (with lineup changes occurring over the years). The name Junius comes from the mysterious 18th-century political writer Junius, known for sharply critical letters aimed at the British government—reflecting the band’s fascination with history, philosophy, and existential themes.
Junius first gained attention with their early EPs, Forcing Out the Silence (2004) and Blood Is Bright (2006), both of which showcased their ability to balance crushing heaviness with ethereal textures. Their debut full-length album, The Martyrdom of a Catastrophist (2009), established them as one of the more distinctive acts in the post-metal underground. The album was heavily inspired by the life and work of Immanuel Velikovsky, exploring themes of catastrophe and cosmic upheaval.
Their follow-up album, Reports from the Threshold of Death, pushed their sound further into darker and more emotional territory. Inspired by near-death experiences, the album became one of their most acclaimed releases, praised for its immersive atmosphere and emotional depth.
After a brief hiatus from full-length releases, Junius returned with Eternal Rituals for the Accretion of Light, an album exploring spiritual transcendence, inner struggle, and transformation. Their sound continued to evolve, becoming even more layered and cinematic while maintaining the band’s signature emotional intensity.
Over the years, Junius has built a loyal cult following thanks to powerful live performances and a sound often compared to bands like Neurosis, ISIS, Cult of Luna, and Deftones, while still remaining distinctly their own. Their music stands out for combining crushing heaviness with introspection, melancholy, and beauty.
With the release of Sotera in 2026, Junius continues to push their atmospheric and emotionally resonant sound forward, further cementing their reputation as one of the most compelling bands in modern post-metal.
