It was more than forty years ago when Sorcery released their first demo, Arrival - true pioneers of the Swedish death metal scene, part of a movement that reshaped heavy music forever. Two more demos and a rehearsal tape followed before the release of the infamous 'Rivers Of The Dead' single in 1990 and then, in 1991, a debut album that would become recognised as a classic of the genre - Bloodchilling Tales. This dread tome of madness should have seen Sorcery marching forwards alongside contemporaries like Entombed and Dismember, but interminable line-up changes led to the band slipping into a state of hibernation in 1997; one from which they would not emerge until 2009.

Having signed with Xtreem Music the second era of Sorcery began in earnest in 2013, with the release of the well-received album Arrival At Six. Since then there has been no looking back for these progenitors of Swedish death, with the stunning Garden Of Bones landing in 2016 and the vicious Necessary Excess Of Violence drawing blood in 2019…and the story does not end there. Now it is time for Sorcery's most unrelenting display of savagery yet to emerge from the lightless caverns of their lair. The horrors of The Immaculate Sin are upon us!

Beginning with a sinister, malevolent guitar motif, opening track 'Shadowborn' then explodes into the band's trademark rampaging death metal attack. With everything turned up to the max this is a crushing display of chaos and thunder. Steeped in the classic aura and atmosphere of the scene that Sorcery helped to spawn, The Immaculate Sin proceeds to deliver salvo after salvo of death metal firepower and carnage! From the chainsaw riffing and skull-cracking drums of 'Set The World Ablaze' to the killer intent and killer riffs of 'Slice It Up', there is no hint of daylight on the horizon. Each track is swathed in the graveyard mist of the early '90s, but raw, mean, bloody and vital. These are quality songs, born in rot and Sorcery's hunger to destroy never flags, hitting new peaks of violence as The Immaculate Sin nears its conclusion. 'The Exorcist' shakes the heavens, igniting souls and ensnaring the unwary with its flesh ripping hooks and the majestic finale of 'Die In Retribution', a fusion of melody and brute force, sets the seal on an album that brutally demonstrates that Swedish death metal is still undead, still dark and still decidedly dangerous.

Sorcery is a Swedish death metal band from Sandviken, Gävleborg, formed in 1986. Emerging during the formative years of the Swedish extreme metal underground, the band belongs to the early generation that helped shape what would soon become internationally recognized as the Swedish death metal sound.

The roots of Sorcery can be traced back to musicians Magnus Karlsson-Mård and Paul Johansson, who had previously played together in Curse and later Acid Queen. Vocalist Ola Malmström joined in early 1986, and by the summer of that year the line-up had developed into Sorcery. Initially influenced by the heavier and more aggressive side of thrash metal, the band quickly moved toward a darker, faster and increasingly brutal style.

Sorcery released their first demo, The Arrival, in 1987, followed by Ancient Creation in 1988. These early recordings documented the band's transition from aggressive thrash-influenced metal toward the emerging death metal style. By the time of the Unholy Crusade demo in 1989, Sorcery had established a much more distinctive and fully developed death metal identity.

The strength of Unholy Crusade helped secure a deal with the French label Thrash Records, which released the Rivers of the Dead 7-inch EP in 1990. Its two tracks represented an even heavier and more morbid incarnation of Sorcery and were subsequently re-recorded for the band's debut album.

In 1991, Sorcery released their debut full-length, Bloodchilling Tales. Recorded at the legendary Sunlight Studio with producer Tomas Skogsberg, the album arrived during one of the most important periods in Swedish death metal history. Its raw production, sinister atmosphere, crushing riffs and uncompromising songwriting established Bloodchilling Tales as Sorcery's defining early work and eventually earned the album cult status among followers of old-school Swedish death metal.

Despite the album's reputation, Sorcery were unable to capitalize fully on its release. They returned with the Maculated demo in 1992, but numerous line-up changes followed during the subsequent years. The band remained active until 1997, when Sorcery was finally put on hold as members moved on to other projects or lost interest in continuing the group. Several musicians subsequently became involved with bands including In Aeternum, Fear My Solitude, Outremer and Gadget.

More than a decade later, Sorcery was resurrected in 2009. Rather than functioning merely as a nostalgic reunion, the reformed band began creating new material, starting with the Master of the Chains demo. In 2011, the extensive Unholy Creations compilation collected material from the band's formative demo years, preserving an important part of the early Swedish death metal underground. Another demo, Warbringer, appeared in 2012.

Sorcery's full-scale return was completed with Arrival at Six in 2013, their first studio album in more than two decades. Released through Xtreem Music, the record retained the band's traditional Swedish death metal foundation while benefiting from a more modern and powerful production. The album was followed by live activity that included Sorcery's first U.S. tour as well as festival and concert appearances in Europe.

The band continued its second era with Garden of Bones in 2016. Dark, heavy and firmly rooted in old-school death metal, the album demonstrated that Sorcery had become a productive band again rather than simply revisiting its early legacy.

Three years later, Sorcery released Necessary Excess of Violence in 2019 through Xtreem Music. Once again emphasizing crushing riffs, darkness and the unmistakable character of traditional Swedish death metal, the record further strengthened the band's position as one of the surviving veterans of the country's first death metal generation.

Although Sorcery never achieved the international profile of contemporaries such as Entombed, Dismember or Grave, their history reaches back to the same crucial period in which Swedish death metal was taking shape. Their early demos, the Rivers of the Dead EP and particularly Bloodchilling Tales remain valuable documents of that formative underground scene.

With roots stretching back to 1986 and a career interrupted by more than a decade of inactivity, Sorcery represents both the original spirit and the enduring longevity of old-school Swedish death metal—raw, dark, uncompromising and unmistakably Swedish.
