Spirit Possession is an American black metal duo formed in Portland, Oregon in 2019 by vocalist/guitarist S. Peacock and drummer/synthesist A. Spungin. Emerging from the more experimental reaches of the American underground, the band quickly established a distinctive identity built around raw black metal, frantic heavy and thrash metal riffing, unorthodox song structures and an atmosphere that feels simultaneously archaic and strangely futuristic.

S. Peacock was already known from projects including Ulthar and the highly experimental Mastery, and some of that adventurous approach carries over into Spirit Possession. Rather than simply recreating the sound of early black metal, the duo takes its primitive energy and reshapes it into something considerably more unpredictable. Razor-edged guitar work, violent rhythmic shifts, eerie synthesizers and Peacock's harsh, possessed vocals combine into music that can sound chaotic on first encounter, yet reveals a surprisingly deliberate construction beneath the surface.

Spirit Possession first emerged with recordings made at their own SP Dungeon during 2019. These early sessions demonstrated the fundamental characteristics that would define the band: abrasive production, labyrinthine riffing, sudden changes of direction and an almost ritualistic atmosphere. Their initial demo material circulated through the underground before the duo signed with Profound Lore Records for the release of their self-titled debut album.

Spirit Possession, released in July 2020, introduced the band to a wider international audience. Across tracks such as Deity of Knives and Pointed Apparitions, Twin Tongued Pathways and Swallowing Throne, the album combined the hostility of first-wave black metal with twisted thrash, traditional heavy metal and experimental tendencies. The deliberately raw recording retained the immediacy of a rehearsal-room performance while allowing the band's unusually intricate guitar work and rhythmic ideas to remain prominent. Re-amping, mixing and mastering were handled by Colin Marston at Menegroth, The Thousand Caves in New York.

Rather than settling into the formula established by their debut, Spirit Possession pushed their music further into strange territory with their second full-length, Of the Sign..., released by Profound Lore in March 2023. Recorded at SP Dungeon in February 2022 and again mixed and mastered by Colin Marston, the album expanded virtually every aspect of the band's sound.

Songs such as Orthodox Weapons, Second Possession, Practitioners of Power and Enter the Golden Sign feature feverish guitar passages, abrupt rhythmic mutations and increasingly prominent synthesizer textures. Short instrumental pieces including Of the Sign..., The Hex and The Altar further enhance the record's occult and otherworldly atmosphere. The result is black metal that retains the primitive violence of the genre's earliest forms while refusing to be confined by their conventions.

One of Spirit Possession's defining qualities is the relationship between traditionalism and experimentation. The duo clearly draws inspiration from the raw foundations of black and thrash metal, but nostalgia is never the primary objective. Familiar elements are distorted, rearranged and pushed into unexpected directions. Riffs can move from primitive aggression into dissonant or almost psychedelic passages within seconds, while Spungin's drumming constantly drives and destabilizes the music underneath.

The band's synthesizers are equally important. Rather than providing lush symphonic backgrounds, they frequently appear as eerie electronic interruptions, strange melodic signals and unsettling atmospheric textures. This gives Spirit Possession an identity markedly different from both conventional raw black metal and the more polished forms of avant-garde black metal.

In 2025, Vexations Records released Demos of Knives, collecting Spirit Possession's formative recordings. The release included material from the band's original demo alongside a previously unreleased second demo that had circulated privately. Recorded during the group's earliest period, these tracks provide a revealing glimpse into the development of the sound that would later emerge fully formed on the two Profound Lore albums.

Despite operating with the minimal configuration of two musicians, Spirit Possession creates music that feels remarkably dense and volatile. Their work occupies an unusual space between primitive underground black metal, old-school speed and thrash metal, psychedelic experimentation and avant-garde extremity.

With Spirit Possession and Of the Sign..., the duo has established itself as one of the more individual voices within contemporary American black metal — a band rooted firmly in the genre's hostile underground traditions while continually twisting those traditions into increasingly bizarre and unpredictable shapes.
