Suicide Silence is an American deathcore band formed in Riverside, California, in 2002. Emerging from Southern California’s extreme metal and hardcore scene, the band became one of the defining acts of the deathcore movement during the second half of the 2000s. Their combination of death metal brutality, hardcore-derived breakdowns, grindcore intensity and groove-heavy songwriting helped establish a template that would influence a generation of bands.

During their earliest years, Suicide Silence went through several personnel changes while developing their sound through demos and local performances. Vocalist Mitch Lucker soon became the band’s unmistakable frontman, while guitarist Chris Garza emerged as one of its central founding members. The self-titled Suicide Silence EP appeared in 2005 and provided the first substantial indication of the direction the band would pursue.

Their breakthrough arrived with the debut full-length The Cleansing in 2007. Released through Century Media Records, the album delivered an exceptionally aggressive mixture of death metal riffing, guttural and screamed vocals and crushing breakdowns. Tracks such as “Unanswered” and “No Pity for a Coward” became closely associated with the emerging deathcore scene, and The Cleansing subsequently became regarded as one of the genre's landmark releases.

Suicide Silence expanded their audience with No Time to Bleed in 2009. The album retained the brutality of the debut while introducing a somewhat more developed and controlled approach to the band's songwriting. By this point Suicide Silence had grown from an underground act into one of the most prominent bands associated with deathcore, touring extensively and receiving the Best New Talent award at the 2009 Revolver Golden Gods Awards.

The third album, The Black Crown, followed in 2011. While remaining unmistakably heavy, it incorporated stronger groove-oriented elements and further broadened the band's sound. The album contained “You Only Live Once”, which became one of Suicide Silence's best-known songs and eventually one of deathcore's most recognizable tracks.

The band's career was struck by tragedy in 2012. Mitch Lucker was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident on October 31 and died from his injuries on November 1, aged 28. His death left the future of Suicide Silence uncertain and represented an enormous loss for both the band and the wider deathcore community.

In December 2012, the surviving members staged the Ending Is the Beginning: The Mitch Lucker Memorial Show, featuring numerous guest vocalists. The performance was subsequently released as a live album and video in 2014.

Suicide Silence ultimately decided to continue. In 2013, Hernan “Eddie” Hermida, previously vocalist for All Shall Perish, was announced as Lucker's successor. The first studio album with Hermida, You Can't Stop Me, appeared in 2014. The title was taken from lyrics left behind by Lucker, giving the record a direct connection to the band's previous era while simultaneously beginning a new chapter.

The self-titled Suicide Silence followed in 2017 and became one of the most controversial releases of the band's career. Produced by Ross Robinson, the album represented a substantial stylistic departure, incorporating nu-metal influences, experimental structures and clean vocals. The change divided listeners and produced considerable backlash among sections of the band's established audience.

With Become the Hunter in 2020, Suicide Silence moved back toward the considerably heavier deathcore-oriented approach associated with their earlier work. The album restored much of the aggression and brutality that had defined the band's reputation.

Longtime drummer Alex Lopez departed in 2022 after approximately sixteen years with the group and was eventually succeeded by Ernie Iniguez. The renewed lineup recorded Remember... You Must Die, released in 2023. The record continued the return to a direct and uncompromising deathcore sound, combining the band's established breakdown-heavy attack with contemporary production.

In September 2026, Suicide Silence announced their eighth studio album, Graceless. Produced by Hunter Young and Austin Coupe, the record was created with an explicit connection to the band's early deathcore roots as Suicide Silence approached the twentieth anniversary of The Cleansing. The eleven-track album is scheduled for release through Century Media Records on November 20, 2026.

More than two decades after their formation, Suicide Silence remain one of the most recognizable and influential names in deathcore. Their career has encompassed underground beginnings, international success, devastating personal loss, stylistic experimentation and subsequent reinvention, while albums such as The Cleansing, No Time to Bleed and The Black Crown remain closely associated with the genre's rise during the late 2000s and early 2010s.
