BIOGRAPHY
The Blank Standard exists to create BRUTAL BONE-CRUSHING METAL.
Originally formed in 2011 as a 5-piece band, The Blank Standard quickly became known for awe-inspiring live performances. Through the years following the initial foray onto the scene, the band has seen change and challenge.
After the departure of several members in late 2013, Eric and Brandon continued on with the indispensable help of Paul Gravdal. Nearly 5 years later, perseverance has resulted in the release of the band's self-titled debut album; an authentic representation of the power that the band brought live, and a bridge to the future with the reemergence of The Blank Standard.
Wondering what the hell our band name means? Let’s take a journey together through Canto III of Inferno by Dante Alighieri. Here, we encounter one of the most captivating concepts in the whole work, the Vestibule of Hell, where the “luke-warm”, or “uncommitted”, make their endless circuit around the outer border of Hell, on the shores of the River Acheron.
These woeful souls and fallen angels are not allowed into Hell, nor into Heaven. They never took a side, never stood for anything, for good or ill, and so they are condemned to march behind a blank standard for all eternity. This empty, military-style banner represents the fickle, ever-changing nothingness of the motivations that have informed their choices (or lack thereof) throughout their cowardly existence.
They march behind the banner devoid of meaning, as hornets and gadflies prick their feeble consciences, and as maggots and worms slither about their meandering tracks, personifying the putrid staleness of their indecision. These “beings” may as well not be, may as well unify with the filth they fester in, steered not this way, nor that, neither becoming nor having become; a waste of creation, a blasphemy toward evil and good alike. How would you live your life, good listener? Are you all in? Are you acting with deliberation, or are you rank and file, following the blank standard?
