Pittsburgh (PA) - Brutal death metal foursome, Vulgar Mephitis, have joined the Willowtip roster! The band is set to release From Dust, their debut full-length album, on September 11.
The album's first single, "Martyr," is available now on all digital platforms. Check it out below:
On From Dust, Vulgar Mephitis follows their 3-track, 2022 self-titled debut EP with a compositionally varied approach that disorients with violent tempo disruption and dissonant riff angularity. The impression left is a lasting, albeit jarring, one.
Guitarist Dan Martin explains the songwriting approach this time around: "The main difference in songwriting from the 2022 EP to now would be the addition of myself and Nick Bentzel (drums) stepping into the band, which expanded upon the way songs are structured in general. Previously, the writing process was solely done by Jay Schweinberg (bass) and Jacob Toy (vocals). At the time, the idea was to be a straight up brutal band with linear song structures."

BIOGRAPHY/LOGO

Vulgar Mephitis is a brutal death metal band from Pittsburgh, formed in 2020. Emerging from the ever-filthy underground death metal scene of western Pennsylvania, the band quickly earned attention for their suffocating heaviness, grotesque atmosphere, and relentless songwriting. Their sound blends old-school brutal death metal savagery with technical precision, combining crushing slam-infused riffs, pummeling drum work, and monstrous guttural vocals into an intensely oppressive wall of sound. Fans of bands like Suffocation, Devourment, and Internal Bleeding will likely feel right at home.
The band made a strong first impression with their self-titled debut EP, Vulgar Mephitis, released in 2022. The EP featured three tracks—“Ex Inferis,” “Inert Gas Asphyxiator,” and “Vile Manipulation”—showcasing the band’s knack for balancing crushing groove with chaotic brutality. The release received positive feedback in underground death metal circles and helped establish the band as one of the more exciting newer acts in modern brutal death metal. Their music is marked by grim lyrical themes centered around violence, psychological collapse, and bodily horror, delivered with a raw intensity that feels both visceral and unsettling.
Vulgar Mephitis continued building momentum through live performances and later returned with Demo 2024, which further expanded their sonic assault. The demo reinforced the band’s reputation for uncompromising heaviness while showing subtle growth in songwriting and production. Despite remaining independent for much of their existence, they gained support from the underground scene and attracted attention from labels and distributors such as Maggot Stomp, known for championing modern old-school death metal.
The current lineup consists of vocalist Jacob Toy, guitarist Dan Martin, bassist Jay Schweinberg, and drummer Nick Bentzel. Together, they continue pushing a savage style of brutal death metal that feels both modern and deeply rooted in the genre’s classic foundations. With a growing reputation and increasingly strong releases, Vulgar Mephitis stands as a band worth watching for anyone into filthy, crushing American brutal death metal.
