NIGHTINGALE Retribution

Nightingale is the brainchild of Swedish producer, singer and multi-instrumentalist Dan Swanö also known from among others Edge Of Sanity, Bloodbath and Witherscape. While most of his other projects points in the direction of death- and extreme metal Nightingale is something quite different. This is the project that allows Dan to realize all his ideas that don’t fit directly into his heavier projects. The material on ‘Retribution’ is simpler structured and sounds more straight forward, heavily inspired by genres such as AOR, melodic hard rock, progressive rock and even gothic rock with a lot of late 70’s and 80’s feel to it but yet presented in a very updated and organic production. Imagine some kind of a mixture of bands such as Journey, Styx, Marillion, Kansas, Opeth and Anathema and you should have a pretty good idea of what this sounds like. Except from Dan, Nightingale consist of his brother Dag on guitars and keyboards, Erik Oskarsson on bass and Tom Björn on drums. Despite the simpler structure of the material, it still sounds interesting, melodic and extremely atmospheric. As Dan stated himself; “It’s not easy to write simple stuff that’s good”, but on ‘Retribution’ he and the rest of the guys have most certainly succeeded in that respect and every single track on the album are of top notch quality. I can therefore highly recommend this album to all Dan Swanö fans out there as well as fans of melodic rock, progressive rock and gothic rock in general.
