Thulcandra was founded back in 2003 by Steffen Kummerer (OBSCURA) and Juergen Zintz with a clear intention of composing music in the vein of acts such as Dissection, Sacramentum and Unanimated, a celebration of old-school Swedish blackened death metal as the band states on their hompepage. Personally I would define Thulcandra as a melodic black metal band, rather than a death metal band even though you might hear a few hints of death metal in their sound as well. The formula is well known and their sources of inspiration are quite obvious, but the bottom line is that Steffen Kummerer and his colleagues have created their best album to date with great melodic and atmospheric songs wrapped into an excellent production. Another aspect about this album that makes it insteresting is the guitar work og Mr. Kummerer and his partner Sebastian Ludwig, and that goes both for the refreshingly aggressive riffs and rythm parts as well as all those cleverly and tasty arranged lead guitar parts. The use of acoustic guitars here and there just makes it more interesting. 'Ascension Lost' is by no means an album that will inovate the entire melodic black metal scene, but I honestly couldn't care less as long as the music appeals to me as a listener - and in this case it does!
