It's been five years since Swedish folk/viking metal veterans Thyrfing released their previous album 'Hels Vite', but now they are finally back with their new effort that I'm sure will be well received by their faithful fans. 'De Ödeslösa' doesn't see a change to Thyrfings well known, and successful formula, except from the fact that this album shows the band from a slightly rawer side. There's no need to worry though, the symphonic, atmospheric and folk inspired elements are still very precent in the sound. Creating captivating atmospheres has always been one of Thyrfing's main strengths and that trend continues on 'De Ödeslösa' as well. I really like the production on this album, it's not clinical but still very good. It's open and gives space for the orchestral parts and effects without getting in conflict with the other instruments. The vocals plays a very dominant role in the production, which is also a good thing for the all over atmosphere of the album. Jens Rydén does a very good job with the vocals, and I personally find his style more suitable to the Thyrfing sound than their original singer Thomas Väänänen. Most important though, is the song material itself and all songs on this album are of high quality with lots of variation, great melody lines and atmospheric orchestration. Afer a few rounds in the cd player 'De Ödeslösa' has quickly sailed up as my favourite Thyrfing album.
