It's been five years since Swedish folk/viking metal veterans Thyrfing released their previous album 'Hels Vite', but now they are finally back with their new effort that I'm sure will be well received by their faithful fans. 'De Ödeslösa' doesn't see a change to Thyrfings well known, and successful formula, except from the fact that this album shows the band from a slightly rawer side. There's no need to...
Three years have passed since Trond Holter released his excellent rock opera Dracula - Swing Of Death, featuring Jørn Lande on vocals. The original plan was to leave Swing Of Death as a one-off project, but the success following it's release convinced Holter to start working on a follow up. The result is finally here in the shape of Vlad The Impaler. Vlad, also known as Vlad Dracula was...
Dutch death metal act Apophys has been around since 2012 and ‘Devoratis’ is their sophomore album. Featuring members of God Dethroned and Toxocara this is a band with both experience and a clear vision and approach to their writing – song structure above technicality. The music is technical indeed, but you can clearly hear that composing good and well-arranged songs is their main objective. ‘Devoratis’ is a concept album,...
'Train Of Thought' er Dream Theaters friskeste og mest tekniske skive siden 'Awake', låtmaterialet er utrolig sterkt og mye av den gode gamle Dream Theater feelingen er tilbake. Da er det vel bare å legge seg langflat? Nja, ikke helt kanskje. Bandet har nemlig falt for fristelsen og blitt moderne. Disse forferdelige nu-metal elementene som dukker opp her og der i låtene gir meg brekningsfornemmelser. Hadde Dream Theater holdt...
WITHERSCAPE is the new project of Swedish singer, multi-instrumentalist and producer Dan Swanö and another multi-instrumentalist named Ragnar Widerbeg, where Swanö is responsible for vocals, keyboards and drums while Widerberg takes care of all guitar and bass parts on the album. ‘The Inheritance’ thick concept album split into different episodes and very briefly, the Witherscape story takes place in a remote village in northern Sweden in the late 1800’s....
With their previous album Embryo clearly stated that they would be a force to count on when it comes to melodic death metal, or I should probalby say symphonic death metal since their music is more in the vein of bands like Fleshgod Apocalypse or Septicflesh than for instance the Gothenburg way of meodic death metal. Embryo doesn´t take the symphonic elements to such extreme heights as those two...
Death Dealer is probably a new name to some, myself included, but if you are a fan of traditional heavy metal and power metal you will soon discover a few familiar faces in the lineup, some real veterans within the genre. ‘War Master’ was originally released in 2013 on CD, but is now also made available on vinyl. Death Dealer is actually more like a US power metal all-star...
Night Demon is a 3-piece traditional metal band heading from Ventura, California and 'Curse Of The Damned' is their debut album. The first thought that came to my mind after having heard this album was that it sounded like it could have been recorded in the glorious days of heavy metal in the mid-eighties, and this goes both for the song material, the production and the all over atmosphere...
It's been seven long years since Communic released their last album, 'The Bottom Deep', so their new album has been anticipated by fans around the world for quite a while but now it's finally here. I still remember the day back in 2004 when Oddleif sent me a three track demo entitled 'Conspiracy In Mind', I was blown away by what I heard and predicted major metal labels to...
Finnish melodic progressive metallers Silent Voices, often referred to as “the other band” of Sonata Arctica members Henrik Klingenberg and Pasi Kauppinen, are back with their fourth studio effort. Seven years have passed since the excellent ‘Building Upt The Apathy’ saw the light of day, but finally the much anticipated follow up is here. The style is more or less the same as before, which means a mixture of...
