De to Østerrikske brødrene Christian og Marcus Keimel grunnla Lydia’s Gemstone tilbake i 2007 og året etter gav ut de ut demo platen ’No endorphins added’. 'The new melancholy' ble innspilt i 2010 og er altså deres første plateutgivelse med et plateselskap i ryggen. The new melancholy og låten ‘The Lunar Threnody’ åpner med et kjent riff man har hørt tidligere i My dying Bride’s ‘The Wreckage of my...
It's not a big secret that I've always been a huge Vintersorg fan, and I consider every single album in their discography pure quality. With that said, I must add that the first two albums, not counting the Hedniskhjärtad EP, had this indefineable magical atmosphere that still make them my go-to Vintersorg albums. Some of the later albums had more complex song structures and way better production, but even...
German band Apallic released an EP a couple of years ago, but this is their first full-length album. I've noticed that they are beeing promoted as a progressive/technical death metal band, but even though there are such elements in their music I tend more towards defining it as melodic death metal. The first thing that came to my mind when i first heard 'Of Fate And Sanity' was;...
‘Ruins Of Empires’ is third full length album from Canadian death metallers Aeternam, and I’ve been waiting in anticipation for this band to follow up their excellent 2012 release ‘Moongod’. Aeternam is by no means a mainstream death metal band since their music and lyrics are heavily inspired by Middle Eastern music and history. Yes, there are other bands following the same recipe but even though parallels could be...
San Diego, California based Gravespell are back with their sophomore album to follow up their 2013 debut 'Gaia Terminus'. Their style is a mixture of technical death metal and black metal, inspired by Norwegian black metal acts such as Emperor and Windir as well as bands from the melodic and technical side of the death metal genre. The material on 'Frostcrown' is aggressive with a technical twist, but also...
Dutch old school death metal band Bodyfarm are back with their third studio album, following up their great 2013 release ‘The coming scourge’. My first impression after having heard ‘Battle Breed’ was that it sounded a bit thrashier than its predecessor with a slightly more screaming style of vocals, and still after several rounds I’m not fully convinced. On the track ‘Prince of Wallachia’ on the other hand Bodyfarm...
While the first three Allen/Lande albums were written by Swedish guitarist and songwriter Magnus Karlsson, this new one features the song writing talent of ex-Stratovarius guitarist Timo Tolkki who has also produced the album as well as playing all guitars, bass and keyboards on it. Musically Allen/Lande is still wandering in more or less the same landscape as on their previous albums but still I feel it sounds fresher...
